Try before you buy

Chooks, chooks and more chooks

Knox City Council

Knox City Council allows you to keep 5 chooks without a permit. Read the Gardens for Harvest chooks factsheet.

Hume City Council

Hume residents on a suburban lot (less than 4,000 square metres) may keep up to 5 chooks without a permit. 

Maribyrnong City Council

Maribyrnong City Council allows you to keep up to 10 chooks depending on your size of land. 

Moreland City Council

​No keeping of chooks is allowed in a flat, unit, apartment or townhouse. Up to 4 are allowed on a houseblock. 

Mornington Peninsula Shire

If you are on a small block (less than 500sqm), you may not keep chooks without a permit. House blocks above 500sqm may keep up to 5 chooks, on land greater than 1200sqm you may keep 10 chooks and if you are on 1ha or more you may keep 20 chooks without a permit. 

Frankston City Council 

Frankston City allows you to keep up to 6 hens without a permit. Different conditions apply if you are on a small block such as a unit. The local law stipulates location and structure of chook housing.
